Peter Pan (Wisehouse Classics Anniversary Edition)

The unabridged Anniversary Edition of the original novel "Peter and Wendy" (or "Peter Pan"), published in 1911, is now available from Wisehouse Classics. This edition includes the original thirteen illustrations by F. D. Bedford. "Peter and Wendy" or "Peter Pan" is J. M. Barrie's most celebrated work, initially presented as a play in 1904 before being adapted into a novel in 1911. The story follows Peter Pan, a mischievous yet pure-hearted young boy with the ability to fly, as he embarks on adventures on the magical island of Neverland, home to mermaids, fairies, Native Americans, and pirates. Other notable characters include Wendy Darling and her two brothers, Peter's fairy companion Tinker Bell, the Lost Boys, and the fearsome pirate Captain Hook.

The inspiration for the play and novel came from Barrie's close relationship with the Llewelyn Davies family. Following the 1904 debut in London, where Nina Boucicault played the title role, the play underwent numerous revisions until it was finally published as a script in 1928. The success of the production led to a Broadway adaptation in 1905 starring Maude Adams, and subsequent revivals featuring actresses like Marilyn Miller and Eva Le Gallienne. Over the years, "Peter and the Wendy" has been adapted into various forms including pantomimes, stage musicals, television specials, and several films.

The novel was originally published in 1911 by Hodder & Stoughton in the UK and Charles Scribner's Sons in the US, featuring illustrations by F. D. Bedford. In 1915, an abridged version titled "Peter Pan and Wendy" was released with Barrie's approval, illustrated by Mabel Lucie Attwell in 1921. In a generous gesture, Barrie bequeathed the copyright of his Peter Pan works to Great Ormond Street Hospital in 1929, a children's hospital in London.
